| (g) A scene from the "Rainbow Pride Walk 2004" organized by Integration Society, Calcutta, on Stonewall Riots Day – June 27, 2004. The Stonewall Riots that took place in June 1969 in New York, USA, were a spontaneous outburst against police harassment of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people and are considered to have catalyzed the modern LGBT movement in USA (and many other parts of the world). June 27 is marked as Stonewall Riots Day the world over.
In the picture (from left to right): Santanu Pyne, Rupa Basu (both SAATHII Calcutta staff), Kishore Mohanty (from Fellowship, Bhadrak, a partner organization of SAATHII Calcutta) and Pawan Dhall (also from SAATHII Calcutta). SAATHII Calcutta participates in the walk every year in solidarity with the LGBT movement. Without their pride and self-esteem intact, LGBT people can never be healthy and strong against the threat of HIV/AIDS. Picture: Anupam Hazra |
